Rory Schmier is a construction professional and ranch manager based in Arboles, Colorado, with a career that spans agriculture, construction, business ownership, and property management. Born in Durango, Colorado, he spent much of his childhood moving with his family throughout the state. His early years included time in Pagosa Springs, where he attended school through the fifth grade before relocating to Monte Vista. There, he completed high school. These experiences exposed him to a variety of communities and helped shape the adaptability and strong work ethic that have defined his professional life. Growing up in rural Colorado also gave him an early appreciation for practical skills, hard work, and the value of community.
Following graduation, Rory began his career as a farmhand for a local family operation. During six years in agriculture, he developed a deep understanding of land management, farm equipment, and seasonal production cycles. The hands-on nature of the work taught him responsibility, discipline, and the importance of careful planning. Looking to expand his experience, he later moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, where he spent a year working as a mason. This role introduced him to construction practices and building techniques that would become the foundation of his future career.
After returning to Colorado, Schmier entered the retail business and spent five years co-owning and operating a liquor store in the Alamosa area. This experience broadened his understanding of customer service, inventory control, and daily business operations. While the business venture provided valuable lessons, his long-term interests remained rooted in construction and craftsmanship.
Rory eventually established a custom home-building and remodeling company, which it operated successfully for more than twenty years. As a self-taught contractor, he built custom homes and completed remodeling projects throughout the San Luis Valley and Durango regions. His reputation was built on quality workmanship, attention to detail, and a commitment to meeting client expectations. Throughout his years in construction, he managed projects from initial planning through completion, overseeing permitting, coordination, inspections, and customer relations while maintaining a hands-on approach to the work.
In 2012, Schmier returned to agriculture by accepting a ranch management position at a premium hay operation near Durango. In this role, he oversees a 300-acre hay production facility and manages planting schedules, irrigation systems, harvesting operations, equipment maintenance, and hay sales. He also supervises the ranch's residential rental properties and coordinates ongoing property maintenance. His combined experience in construction, agriculture, and business management allows him to approach challenges from multiple perspectives and maintain efficient operations.
Rory Schmier enjoys dirt-bike riding, motorcycle touring, boating, water skiing, hunting, camping, and home improvement projects. He is also committed to helping others through volunteer work, regularly providing handyman services to elderly residents in need. After years of diverse professional experiences, he remains dedicated to his family, community, and the Colorado landscape that has played a significant role in shaping both his career and personal life.
